A goal in the 90th minute by Christopher Wasasala ensured Fiji a third place finish at the Melanesian Spearhead Group Prime Ministers Cup with a 1-nil win over the Solomon Islands in Vanuatu yesterday.

Just when it looked like the bronze medal match was heading into extra-time, Wasasala capitalised on a free kick by Muni Shivam Naidu to give the Digicel Fiji Bula Boys a podium finish.

It wasn’t the colour of the medal the Fijians would have wanted having won five of the previous seven competitions.

Fiji team manager Anushil Kumar said they wanted to finish the tournament with a win.

“We came here to win but so did every other team. It was unfortunate for us to lose out in the semi-finals but our boys wanted to finish this tournament on a high and we did that with a win today.”

Fiji had earlier lost to Papua New Guinea 1-nil in the semi-finals.
