A total of 40 Fijian 7s players signed a one-year contract each this week in an effort to win two gold medals at the Olympic Games in Paris, France next year.
Fiji Rugby Union board interim chairman Peter Mazey confirmed this to Times Sport in an interview yesterday.
The players are 20 each from the Fiji men’s and the Fijians 7s teams.
“So now we have got two teams of twenty people contracted for one year to go through the Olympic Games in Paris next year, they’re based now in Sigatoka,” Mazey said.
“And we’re aiming for gold, both for the men and women.
“And that’s my message when I met with all the players last Friday and told them that’s all we want so that is why we’re putting together the top team for that to work. Mazey added the team has other assignments on hand as well for next year.
“The team will not just be preparing for that (Olympic Games), but also for the HSBC 7s, and then we have the Oceania 7s.”
