The Extra Supermarket Futsal Inter District Championship which kicks off at the Vodafone Arena in Suva today will serve as selection for the national training squad in preparation for the 2023 Oceania Football Confederation Futsal Championship.

The winner of the OFC Futsal Championship that will be held in Auckland, New Zealand in October will qualify for the 2024 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

Suva is the defending champion for the IDC.

The side will face Tavua in their opening match this evening.

Fiji Football Association CEO Mohammed Yusuf said they were spending close to $40,000 to host the IDC.

Yusuf said they were paying for everything for the teams to participate in the tournament.

“We are paying for their travelling, accommodation, meals and uniforms,” he said.

“We are spending a lot of money on this tournament. The venue hire has cost us $12,000.

“The OFC Fustal Championship will be held in Auckland this year, so it will be an ideal time for the national selectors to choose players to be part of the training squad.”

The winner of the tournament will receive $4500 while the runner-up will get $1500.
