Outspoken Opposition MP Niko Nawaikula yesterday claimed in Parliament that the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum hated the native people and their rights.
He made the comment while debating the Electoral (Registration of Voters) (Amendment) Bill and other related Bills.
However, Commerce, Trade and Tourism Minister Faiyaz Koya raised a a point of order to condemn the statement made by Mr Nawaikula. He said Mr Nawaikula was “totally” out of order and should be reprimanded for making that statement.
“That is out of order and that is being personal,” he said. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum in his right of reply said Mr Nawaikula took a personal approach.
“When they talk about your ethnicity, religion, your family, you know that they have no good arguments to make,” he said.
“You know they are intellectually deprived and they do not have the intestinal fortitude to be able to argue intellectually.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said he was astounded that the Opposition MP Viliame Gavoka did not stand up to say a thing as he was married to Mr Gavoka’s daughter who was an iTaukei.
“Some of the members of the Opposition who I thought did not think like that but just sat there quietly, were all giving him accolades including a former minister for education.
“I was actually surprised that honourable Gavoka did not stand up and say anything. I’m married to his daughter who is iTaukei. So in other words, honourable Nawaikula says I hate my wife.”
Mr Nawaikula then raised a point of order to withdraw his statement and later apologised.Mr Nawaikula said he meant to say that Mr Sayed-Khaiyum hated ethnicity. |
