THE Fiji National Rugby League is now looking to start its 2021 Vodafone Cup season in June due to the COVID-19 restrictions in the country.

The opening round was initially planned for early May.

“The initial date to start the season was Saturday May 15, but with the 14-day stand down period it is expected to finish on the ninth of May, and it’s not enough time to prepare our teams in that short window,” said Fiji National Rugby League acting chief executive officer Don Natabe.

“So we are looking at starting the Vodafone Cup in June just to give teams at least a two-week window to train and prepare.” Natabe said also on the table this year would be a new women’s format in the Vodafone Cup.

“We have a new women’s competition and we are excited to get it running,” he said.

“Six teams have confirmed participation and it is a great sign showing the women’s game is definitely progressing.”

Meanwhile, Natabe has urged all players to continue their own personal training and prepare to hit the ground running when the green light is given for a return to sports.

“We know players and clubs will be doing their individual preparations, but at the same time we ask everyone to make sure they are taking the necessary precautions against the virus to keep them and their families safe.”

Police Sharks are the defending champion.
