Government ministers are flouting the rules by effectively campaigning while on official duty, using government resources and manipulating State social media pages to their advantage, claims National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad.

He said Fiji had gone into the pre-general election campaign period and “it was a shame that government ministers continue to go around the country to hand over assistance to people hiding behind their ministerial portfolios”.

“The most important thing, the election campaign laws are already in effect,” Prof Prasad said.

“The campaign period has kicked in, we are in a campaign mode and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum brought this law to specifically target the Opposition – so we are subjected to all the campaign laws.

“They are not – because they can hide behind government activities and using government resources and government pages.

“They are going all over the place in government vehicles.”

He claimed Education Minister Premila Kumar had been organising meetings with teachers.

“What is she (Ms Kumar) discussing with these teachers?

“We are just about to have elections and we are in a campaign period, what she is trying to do.”
